Empowering Creativity: Kseniia Fontaine's Journey at the Intersection of AI and Art

At the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Festival in Cannes, France, Kseniia Fontaine, a business development and operations manager at AI for Good, shared her pioneering work at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and her collaboration with artists, bridging the gap between technology and creativity. In conversation with Lisa Thee, Kseniia unveiled her role in spearheading initiatives that welcome AI-focused artists and foster innovative expressions of human ingenuity.

Driving AI Initiatives for Good

With a master's degree in international relations from the University of Geneva and ongoing studies for an MBA at the SBS Swiss Business School in Zurich, Kseniia brings a wealth of expertise to her role. She further honed her skills through an executive course at the MIT Sloan School of Management, focusing on the Strategic Business Implications of AI. Before her tenure at ITU, Kseniia was a Project Manager at the International Standards Organization (ISO), facilitating external relations and providing technical support to enhance performance.

Kseniia's journey into AI began with her involvement in the "AI for Art" project, an initiative under the AI for Good umbrella. Collaborating with international artists like Harry Yaffe and Christian LeClaire, Kseniia explored the fusion of human creativity and AI technology. Through events such as the high-performance showcase at the UN headquarters in Geneva and the Artistic Intelligence Visionary Initiative, Kseniia provided a platform for artists to showcase their AI-driven creations and sparked conversations on the future of creativity.

Fostering Artistic Innovation

Building on the success of the "AI for Art" project, Kseniia launched the Artistic Intelligence Visionary Initiative, curated by renowned artists like Sofia Crespo. This initiative celebrated artistic expertise and prompted reflections on the role of art in shaping our collective future. Additionally, Kseniia initiated the "Canvas of the Future" AI-driven art competition in partnership with Shutterstock, inviting artists worldwide to envision a sustainable future aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In response to concerns raised by the artist community regarding intellectual property (IP) protection, Kseniia emphasized the importance of ethical considerations in AI-generated art. Through collaborations with organizations such as Shutterstock, Kseniia ensured that artists were fairly compensated for their work and that ethical principles, including human rights, were upheld.

A Look Ahead

As Kseniia reflected on her journey, she expressed optimism about the transformative potential of AI-driven creativity. Having received over 30 submissions for the AI-driven art competition, Kseniia eagerly anticipated showcasing the diverse artistic visions at upcoming events. Through her unwavering dedication to innovation and collaboration, Kseniia Fontaine charted a course toward a brighter future at the United Nations, embodying the organization's commitment to harnessing technology for the betterment of humanity.
